Greenshell Mussels are largely grown in the cool, pure beautiful waters of New Zealand's remote bays and inlets and also farmed offshore.
New Zealand marine farming is environmentally friendly. It requires water of high natural quality free of pollutants and rich in food. Mussels feed on the natural nutrients present in the sea and don’t require artificial food additives. Farms are monitored to ensure they meet stringent food safety standards.
For the past nine years our research and production teams have been going the extra mile. We have been running full environmental and water quality programmes and gathering data to better manage the sustainability and husbandry of mussels. The data and the systems we evolved, enabled the company to gain organic certification for mussels from selected farms.
Juvenile mussels, known as spat, are carefully selected from various locations throughout New Zealand and grown in sheltered nursery farms.
Once the spat has grown to sufficient size it is seeded onto ropes on growing farms. Mussels take about 12-18 months to reach perfect size and condition and we inspect their quality before delivering them to our processing plants in Nelson and Tauranga. Every step of the process is strictly quality controlled and harvesting is managed under the New Zealand Quota Management System (QMS).
